The Women in Hydrography Experience being coordinated by the Australasian Hydrographic Society New Zealand Region, is an initiative aimed at addressing the gender imbalance within the field and encouraging more women to pursue careers in hydrography. With women currently representing only 25% of qualified hydrographers globally (IHO, 2024), this programme provides a valuable opportunity for early-stage students to gain hands-on industry experience. Successful applicants are placed with participating organisations, where they engage in practical hydrographic work, build professional networks, and gain insight into career pathways within the sector. This year, five New Zealand organisations (DML, Ocean Infinity, NIWA, Fugro & LINZ) are providing paid work experience, with flights and accommodation covered, ensuring accessibility for all participants.
DML are excited to introduce two outstanding participants, Meg Catley and Amy Caldwell-Smith in this year’s programme, who joined us for a week in December 2024. During their brief time at DML they got to experience time on a survey vessel, data processing multi beam data, installing tide gauge and experimenting with new equipment.
Both Amy and Meg brought great enthusiasm to their opportunity and showed a keen interest in hydrography. Their placements have allowed them to experience different aspects of the profession, from planning and mobilisation, to data collection and processing. By taking part in this initiative, they are not only gaining invaluable industry experience but also helping to pave the way for future generations of women in hydrography. DML is proud to sponsor this programme, and we look forward to following the journeys of this year’s participants as they explore the exciting opportunities within hydrography.
